Lean-toGable
For a roof lantern in Utrecht, you order from DagLichtDesign directly from the maker. The factory is in Barneveld, about 50 km from the city. Via the A12, or via the A1 and the A28, you are there in about three quarters of an hour outside rush hour. For most people in Utrecht, delivery on an agreed date is therefore the logical route.
DagLichtDesign makes and supplies the roof lantern, and your own contractor or builder installs it. If you do not have a regular contractor, installation can be arranged on request through a regular installation partner. It then appears as a separate line in the quotation, so you can see exactly what everything costs.
Utrecht has a wide variety of homes. The city centre has canal houses and narrow town houses, surrounded by 19th-century districts and 1930s neighbourhoods with long rows of terraced houses. After the war, large residential districts were added, and Leidsche Rijn is the new-build district that has been built since the late 1990s.
With a mid-terrace house, the extension almost always sits against a taller rear wall. A wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern is made for exactly that: it connects to the wall and lets in light from above and from the side. In Leidsche Rijn it is more often a rear extension with a flat roof, where a mono-pitch fits.
Because land in the city is scarce, many people in Utrecht prefer to build upwards. With a roof extension with a roof lantern, daylight falls from above into the stairwell or the new bedroom. Above a bedroom, triple glazing is worth considering for its insulation and better sound reduction.
Utrecht's city centre is a protected townscape, and there are many listed buildings outside it too. Stricter rules often apply there to an extension or roof extension than in a new-build district. The roof lantern itself usually does not need a separate permit, but the extension or structure beneath it sometimes does.
So check with the municipality of Utrecht early, before you order the roof lantern. Permits for a roof lantern explains what to look out for.
Delivering in Utrecht takes more planning than on a spacious building plot. Narrow streets, little parking space and a back garden that can only be reached through the house: discuss it with your contractor beforehand. Choose a delivery date that fits their schedule, so the roof lantern does not have to wait for days. Read more about the process under delivery across the Netherlands.
The installation manual includes safety instructions for lifting and positioning. With a roof lantern that has to go over the house to the back, that is no unnecessary luxury.
Contractors and builders in Utrecht order at trade prices from the first project, with no minimum. A delivery time from 2 weeks fits almost any construction schedule. Around the city there are separate pages for Zeist, Houten and Nieuwegein, each covering the homes and questions found there.
