Roof lantern in a veranda

A veranda is an outdoor room: a place in the garden where you eat, read or sit outside while it rains. A roof lantern for a veranda gives that spot a roof with its own pool of light. The solid part keeps out sun and rain, the glass makes sure it never gets gloomy underneath.

Many verandas are built by a veranda specialist or builder who supplies and erects the structure. DagLichtDesign makes the roof lantern that goes into it, to measure, and delivers it to you or directly to the builder.

Roof lantern in a veranda

A roof lantern for a veranda as an outdoor room

A fully glazed veranda roof gives lots of light, but also lots of sun. A solid veranda roof gives shade, but makes the space underneath dark, especially if the veranda is deep. A roof lantern sits in between. You decide where the light falls: above the table, above the lounge sofa or along the house.

Because of the upstand and the pitch, a roof lantern rises slightly above the roof. That gives a sense of height under the veranda that a flat glass roof does not have. A gable roof lantern makes that effect strongest, a mono-pitch one keeps it calmer.

  • Light above the seating, shade at the edges
  • More height thanks to upstand and pitch
  • Clear glass that does not go dull after years outdoors
  • Aluminium frame in the same colour as the veranda

Working with your veranda builder

Let the veranda builder decide on the opening in the roof, with the size he needs for it. That size is the basis for the quote. Send a sketch or photo with the measurements and within 24 hours you receive a price with glazing options and lead time. The builder works from the installation manual and can call with questions on weekdays between 7:00 and 17:00.

If the veranda builder uses roof lanterns regularly, the terms for builders are worth a look: trade prices from the first project and a partner discount for regular cooperation.

Sun, leaves and safety

A south-facing veranda gets sun on the glass all afternoon. Then choose solar control glass or plan a screen, see a screen for a roof lantern. Under a tree, leaves and dirt land on the glass sooner. The standard pitch of 8° helps, but occasional cleaning is still needed. Tips are in maintaining and cleaning a roof lantern.

If there is a tree above the veranda or children play underneath, think about the glass itself too. Safety glass to the NEN standard is available. The difference between toughened and laminated glass is explained in safety glass and laminated glass.

Permit and cost of a veranda with a roof lantern

The roof lantern itself usually needs no separate permit. The veranda sometimes does, depending on its size and position on the plot. Check with your municipality beforehand.

The mono-pitch roof lantern starts from €1,532, the gable roof lantern from €2,399. What the veranda itself costs varies widely by builder and specification. Always ask for a separate quote for it, so you can see both items side by side.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about price, lead time, delivery and installation.

What is the difference between a veranda and a canopy?

In practice the words are used interchangeably. A veranda often stands against the house and is furnished as an outdoor room, a canopy sometimes stands on its own in the garden. For the roof lantern it makes little difference, see also a roof lantern in a canopy.

Is HR++ double glazing needed in an open veranda?

HR++ double glazing is standard. In an open veranda you do not need it for insulation, but it is ready if you later enclose the veranda as a garden room. Triple glazing makes no sense in an open veranda.

Can the roof lantern go straight to the veranda builder?

Yes. The builder can collect it by appointment at the factory in Barneveld, or you have it delivered on an agreed date. Match the date to the builder's schedule.

Which frame colour suits a veranda?

Any RAL colour is possible, so you can match the veranda profiles. Popular choices are jet black (RAL 9005), anthracite (RAL 7016) and traffic white (RAL 9016). More in choosing a frame colour.

What can I do about leaves on the glass?

The standard pitch of 8° lets water and fine dirt wash off. Leaves sometimes stay put, especially under trees. Cleaning once or twice a year with water and a soft brush is usually enough.
