Roof lantern in a canopy

A canopy with a solid roof is great when it rains, but it also takes light away from the windows behind it. The living room or kitchen behind the canopy gets darker as a result. A roof lantern for a canopy combines both: a solid roof where you want shelter, and a strip of glass where the light needs to get in.

Because a canopy almost always stands on the patio, and so often in the sun, heat plays a bigger role than with an extension. That is why this page is mainly about position, glass and sun. Plus the question of whether the canopy needs a permit.

Roof lantern in a canopy

Roof lantern for a canopy: where the glass strip goes

Put the roof lantern on the house side. Daylight then falls against the wall and through the windows, while the front of the canopy gives the shade you want on the patio. A canopy with the roof lantern on the garden side does the opposite: light on the garden furniture, shade at the windows.

For a canopy with a flat roof, a low mono-pitch roof lantern is the obvious choice. It has a standard pitch of 8°, just above the 7° needed for good drainage, see the right pitch for a roof lantern.

  • Glass on the house side for light in the living room
  • Solid roof on the garden side for shade on the patio
  • Drainage to the canopy gutter
  • Have the structure checked before the glass goes on

Overheating: the sun on a glass roof

Glass in a roof catches more sun than glass in a wall. Facing south or west, it can get very warm under a canopy in summer, and that heat carries through to the room behind. With a roof lantern for a canopy, this is the point to think about most.

You have three levers: solar control glass, shading and ventilation. Solar control glass keeps part of the solar heat out and lets the light through. Shading such as a screen can be closed when needed. What works best is explained in overheating under a roof lantern.

Which glass to choose for a canopy

HR++ double glazing is standard and more than enough for an open canopy. A canopy is usually not insulated, so triple glazing makes little sense there. The choice here is mostly about the sun: clear, frosted or solar control. Frosted glass diffuses the light and softens harsh shadows. Solar control glass holds back the heat better.

If you are thinking of enclosing the canopy later to make an annex, take that into account now. The glass and the thermally broken frame will then simply become part of a heated room.

Permit for a canopy with a roof lantern

The roof lantern itself usually needs no separate permit. The canopy sometimes does. That depends on its size, height, position on the plot and your municipality's rules. Check before you order, with the municipality or via the Omgevingsloket. More in planning permission for a roof lantern.

Once that is settled, a photo or sketch of the canopy with the measurements will do. Within 24 hours you have a quote with glazing options, lead time and price.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about price, lead time, delivery and installation.

Isn't a roof lantern in a canopy too hot?

Facing south, it can get warm. Then choose solar control glass or add a screen. Facing north or east, clear HR++ double glazing is usually fine.

Can I add a roof lantern to an existing canopy?

Often, if the structure allows it. Part of the roof comes out, and glass weighs more than most roof sheets. Have your builder or a structural engineer assess it first.

Why glass and not polycarbonate?

Glass stays clear, scratches less easily and insulates better. Polycarbonate is lighter and cheaper, but can turn dull over the years and is noisier in the rain. The trade-off is covered in glass or polycarbonate.

Which roof type suits a canopy?

For a flat or gently sloping roof, a mono-pitch roof lantern, and against the house wall a wall-abutting lean-to. If you want a striking pool of light above the patio, a gable roof lantern works. A hipped roof lantern is more than most canopies need.

How soon can the roof lantern be ready?

From 2 weeks after approval. For complex custom work or special glass, it can take up to 8 weeks. You collect it in Barneveld or have it delivered on an agreed date.
