A gable roof lantern has two glass slopes that meet in the middle at a ridge. It is the classic shape of a roof lantern: from inside you look up into a pitched roof of glass, from outside you see a recognisable lantern on the flat roof. Because of the two slopes, light comes in from both sides, even when the sun is low.
Prices start at €2,399. We make every gable roof lantern to measure in our workshop in Barneveld. As standard we go up to 6 metres long and 4 metres wide per roof slope. If your roof is larger, we build it up in modules.

A gable needs a little more space than a mono-pitch, but gives more back. The ridge sits in the middle, so light spreads evenly across the room below. That works well above a long room, such as a dining table or a kitchen with an island. In a wide side or rear extension it also gives a calm, balanced look.
In the standard version both slopes have the same angle and the ridge sits exactly in the middle. Sometimes that does not fit, for example when the roof lantern is close to a wall or when you want more light on one side. Then we make the gable asymmetrical: the ridge moves and each slope gets its own length or pitch.
Which shape looks best also depends on the proportions of the room. A long, narrow opening calls for a different look than an almost square one. Torn between two roof types? Read gable or hipped roof lantern or mono-pitch or gable roof lantern.
With a gable, water runs off to two sides. Both low sides have a sill with a self-cleaning drainage system. Water, and the dirt the rain carries with it, runs out through these sills and on to your existing gutter or downpipe. So no extra gutter is needed on the roof.
The self-cleaning effect works best with regular rain. It does not replace maintenance. Checking the glass and the sills a few times a year is still wise. How to go about it is explained in maintaining and cleaning a roof lantern.
The frame is thermally broken aluminium, in any RAL colour. Popular choices are RAL 9005 jet black, RAL 7016 anthracite and RAL 9016 traffic white. Want a different colour inside than outside? That is possible too, in bicolour. HR++ double glazing is standard and triple glazing an option. A gable has a lot of glass. If the roof lantern gets a lot of sun, also look at solar control glass.
A gable has more glass and more profiles than a mono-pitch, so fitting it needs good preparation. You collect the roof lantern by appointment in Barneveld or have it delivered on an agreed date. Your own contractor fits it using the installation manual for the gable, including the safety instructions for lifting and positioning. Installation by our regular fitting partner is available on request.

Yes. An asymmetrical gable has an offset ridge, with two slopes of different length or pitch. That is useful close to a wall or when you want more light on one side.
Usually yes, if the structure allows it. Your contractor or structural engineer assesses the load-bearing capacity and the roof opening. The roof lantern itself usually needs no separate permit, the extension sometimes does.
Any RAL colour is possible, including bicolour. Jet black and anthracite give a crisp look, traffic white stands out less against a light ceiling. Help with that choice in choosing a frame colour for your roof lantern.
