Roof lantern in an extension

An extension gives you extra space, but it often costs you light. The window in the old rear wall disappears, and the middle of the living room suddenly sits five or six metres from the nearest glass. An extension roof lantern solves exactly that: daylight from above, at the spot where the old wall used to be and where the house became darkest.

DagLichtDesign makes the roof lantern to measure in its own factory in Barneveld. Your builder fits it into the flat roof of the extension, using the installation manual that comes with every delivery. If you first want to know where your home is short of light, also read how to brighten a dark living room.

Roof lantern in an extension

Where in the extension roof does the roof lantern go?

The most common mistake is putting the roof lantern in the middle of the extension roof. It is already light there, because the new glazed doors are close by. The darkest part is the transition to the original house. So place the roof lantern as close as possible to the old rear wall. That way the light falls into the living room instead of onto the patio.

Next, you choose the direction. A roof lantern running across the full width of the extension spreads the light evenly. A shorter one above the dining table or seating area creates a clear pool of light. Both work, it depends on how you use the room.

  • Against the old rear wall for light in the middle of the house
  • Across the full width for even light
  • Above the dining table for a fixed pool of light
  • Leave room for roof edge, drainage and upstand

Which roof type suits an extension

For most extensions the mono-pitch roof lantern is the logical choice. One sloping pane, neat and low in the roof, with a standard pitch of 8° so the water runs off properly, see also the right pitch for a roof lantern. The 1, 2 and 3 metre sizes are always in stock, and up to 5 metres wide we make it as a single panel without a glazing bar.

If you want more height and a classic silhouette, a gable roof lantern fits well. In a wide, deep extension a hipped roof lantern can fill the whole room with light from every angle. Unsure about a bar in the glass? Read the article on a roof lantern with or without a glazing bar.

Extension roof lantern: new build or added later

If the extension is still being built, your builder includes the opening in the roof straight away. That is the easiest route: joists, upstand and roofing are done right in one go. The lead time, from 2 weeks after approval, usually fits the schedule well, as long as you order as soon as the size is fixed.

Already have an extension? A roof lantern can often still be added. The structure has to allow it, though. Part of the joists comes out, so your builder or a structural engineer assesses what is needed. How that works in practice is explained in a roof lantern in an existing flat roof.

From measurements to delivery

For a quote, a photo or a sketch with the measurements is enough. A building drawing is welcome but not required. Within 24 hours you receive a quote with HR++ double glazing and triple glazing side by side, the lead time and the price. How to measure the opening properly is covered in measuring up for a roof lantern.

Want an idea of the total budget in advance? The cost of an extension with a roof lantern gives an indication of what comes on top of the roof lantern itself.

  • A photo or sketch will do, no building drawing needed
  • Quote within 24 hours with glazing options and lead time
  • Collect in Barneveld or have it delivered on an agreed date
  • Installation manual per roof type with every delivery

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about price, lead time, delivery and installation.

Do I need a permit for the roof lantern in my extension?

For the roof lantern itself, usually not. For the extension, sometimes, depending on its size and position. Check with your municipality or via the Omgevingsloket, the Dutch planning portal, before you start.

How big should the roof lantern in an extension be?

There is no fixed rule. A roof lantern of 2 or 3 metres across the width of an average extension already makes a clear difference. More important than the size is the position: as close as possible to the old rear wall.

Does everyone choose a mono-pitch roof lantern?

It is the most popular type for an extension, because it sits low and neat in the roof. If you want more height or a classic look, you choose a gable roof lantern. For a large extension, a hipped roof lantern is an option.

Won't it get too hot under the roof lantern?

That depends on the orientation. If the extension faces south, solar control glass or shading helps. Facing north, HR++ double glazing with clear glass is usually fine.

Who installs the roof lantern?

Your own builder or handyman. Every delivery comes with a printed and digital installation manual, and phone support is available on weekdays between 7:00 and 17:00. Installation by a regular installation partner is available on request.
