DagLichtDesign makes a 4 metre roof lantern to measure. As a mono-pitch it can be up to 5 metres wide in one panel without a glazing bar, so 4 metres is one continuous glass pane. The lead time for made-to-measure work is from 2 weeks after approval.
Stock sizes go up to 3 metres. A 4 metre roof lantern falls outside that and is therefore made to measure. That is no drawback: the size then fits your opening exactly. For a mono-pitch roof lantern, 4 metres is still well within the 5 metre limit for one panel.
You often see a 4 metre roof lantern on an extension across the full width of a terraced house or on a spacious extension. The glass runs uninterrupted. How that compares with a version with bars is explained under a roof lantern with or without a glazing bar.
A length of 4 metres is also possible as a gable or hipped roof lantern. A gable roof lantern goes up to 6 metres long and 4 metres wide per slope as standard. We make a hipped roof lantern up to 9 m² of glass as one unit. Which type suits you depends on the shape of the room and how you want the light to fall.
At 4 metres, the glass pane becomes large and heavy. The glass has to carry snow and wind and be safe if something falls on it. That is why we use safety glass to NEN standard in a roof. Why laminated glass matters in a roof is explained under safety glass and laminated glass.
Because of the weight, a 4 metre roof lantern is usually fitted with lifting gear. Include that in the schedule with your builder. HR++ double glazing is standard. For a large pane facing south, solar control glass is worth considering.
With made-to-measure work, you and your builder fix the exact size of the upstand. A few centimetres make a big difference at 4 metres. Read measuring up for a roof lantern beforehand.
