Roof lantern in a conservatory or garden room

Many conservatories were built as a link between house and garden, with a roof of plastic sheets or single glazing. Almost everyone knows the result: too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and a dull roof after a few years. A conservatory roof lantern takes a different approach. You make most of the roof solid and insulated, and put the glass exactly where the light needs to come in.

A garden room is a related space, but often stands on its own in the garden: a studio, a home office or a place to read. There too, a roof lantern gives light from above without having to make the walls entirely of glass.

Roof lantern in a conservatory or garden room

From a plastic roof to a glass roof lantern

Older conservatories often have a polycarbonate roof. It is light and cheap, but insulates poorly, turns dull over the years and drums loudly in the rain. A roof lantern with HR++ double glazing in a thermally broken aluminium frame performs differently on all those points. The difference between the materials is explained in glass or polycarbonate.

If you replace the conservatory roof, have the structure assessed first. Glass is heavier than plastic sheets. Your builder or a structural engineer checks whether the posts and beams can take it, or what needs strengthening.

  • Better insulation than plastic sheets
  • Clear glass that does not go dull
  • Quieter in the rain
  • Have the structure checked first

Conservatory roof lantern against the house: the wall-abutting lean-to

A conservatory almost always stands against the rear wall. The roof starts at the house and slopes down towards the garden. That is exactly the shape of a wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern. It joins the wall on its high side and gives light from above and down the wall. Upstand and flashing profiles for your wall type are supplied to measure.

If the garden room stands on its own, there is no wall to join. A mono-pitch or a gable roof lantern is then the more obvious choice. The gable roof gives a flat-roofed garden room a recognisable silhouette.

Warm in winter, cool in summer

If you want to use the conservatory or garden room all year, the insulation of the glass matters. HR++ double glazing is standard. Triple glazing insulates more than twice as well and makes sense if the room faces north or west, or if you sleep or work there all day. More on triple glazing in a roof lantern.

In summer it is all about sun and air. Solar control glass or shading keeps the heat out, and opening windows or doors lets warm air escape. A conservatory with a lot of glass in its walls benefits from it all the more.

Preventing condensation in a conservatory

Conservatories often suffer from condensation. It is caused by cold glass and humid air, especially with plants, a drying rack or a coffee machine in the room. Better insulating glass keeps the inner pane warmer, and ventilation removes the moisture. Causes and solutions are in condensation on a roof lantern.

The frame is aluminium and thermally broken, so less cold gets in through the profile as well. Want to know how aluminium compares with timber or steel? Read aluminium, timber or steel.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about price, lead time, delivery and installation.

Can I replace my conservatory roof with a roof lantern?

Often, yes. Usually part of the roof is made solid and insulated, and the roof lantern goes where the light is needed most. Have the load-bearing capacity assessed first by your builder or a structural engineer.

What is the difference between a conservatory and a garden room?

A conservatory stands against the house and forms the link to the garden. A garden room often stands on its own in the garden. For the roof lantern that means: often a wall-abutting lean-to for a conservatory, a mono-pitch or gable roof lantern for a detached garden room.

Should I choose triple glazing for a conservatory?

Not always. Facing south, and for a room you mainly use during the day, HR++ double glazing is usually more than enough. Triple pays off mainly facing north or west, and if you sleep or work there all day.

Do I need a permit for a conservatory with a roof lantern?

For the roof lantern itself, usually not. For the conservatory or garden room, sometimes, depending on size and position. Check with your municipality before you order.

Can a conservatory have frosted glass?

Yes. Frosted glass diffuses the light and gives privacy if the neighbours live higher up and look onto your roof. The light stays soft and there are no harsh shadows.
