In a commercial building, daylight largely determines how pleasant a space is to work in. A deep office, a practice room without windows or an industrial unit with only a roller door nearly always needs artificial light during the day. A commercial roof lantern solves that. Whether it is an industrial unit, an office or a practice: the light comes in from above, even in the middle of the building, far from the outside wall.
DagLichtDesign makes roof lanterns for homes, but also for commercial buildings. Such projects are often larger or more unusual, and we are happy to think them through with you. Below, by type of space, what to look out for.

An office with screens needs light without glare. Frosted or solar control glass prevents harsh sun on the screen. A practice room, for example for a physiotherapist or dentist, often needs privacy. Frosted glass lets the light in, but not the view from outside.
In a studio, the direction of the light matters. Many artists prefer to work under north light, because it stays even throughout the day. In an industrial unit or workshop it is mainly about how much light reaches the floor and how robust the glass needs to be.
For a large space with many people, a hipped roof lantern is often the best choice. Four sloping sides give light from every angle. Up to 9 m² of glass is possible in one piece, larger with segments and concealed bars. The standard pitch is 8°.
A roof lantern has no moving parts. In an office or practice, airing and cooling are handled by the building services or the windows in the wall, while the lantern provides the daylight. That keeps the glass one sealed, low-maintenance whole.
An industrial unit usually has a large flat roof. It can take several roof lanterns in a row, for example to replace old rooflight domes. How that works is explained in replacing a rooflight dome with a roof lantern. The aluminium frame is available in any RAL colour and HR++ double glazing is standard. A structural engineer includes snow and wind loads in the assessment.
If staff work under the glass, or forklifts and materials move around, safety glass is the sensible choice. Lots of sun on a large glass area can also heat up the unit. Solar control glass keeps part of that heat out.
With a commercial building, an architect or builder is often involved. The CAD file of the roof lantern is available on request, so the architect can include it directly in the drawings. More for designers in roof lanterns for architects.
Builders get trade prices from the first project, with no threshold or minimum, and one fixed point of contact. Regular cooperation adds a partner discount. The terms are set out in roof lanterns for builders.
