The short answer

A mono-pitch roof lantern on a garden canopy keeps your outdoor space dry and sheltered, but takes away the gloom under a solid roof. It sits on an upstand in the solid roof, with a standard pitch of 8° so rain and leaves run off well. Facing south, choose solar control glass or shading. DagLichtDesign supplies from €1,532.

Why a mono-pitch roof lantern on a garden canopy?

A canopy with a fully solid roof gives shade and shelter, but often makes the space beneath it dark. Especially with an outdoor kitchen or lounge area. A mono-pitch roof lantern on a canopy brings light into the middle of that space while the edges stay sheltered. With a single pane, the roof stays calm and low.

A mono-pitch lantern is less suitable if you want a canopy with a visible ridge. In that case, look at a gable roof lantern on a canopy. More on canopies in general is on roof lanterns for garden canopies.

Can my canopy roof carry a glass roof lantern?

That is the first question with a canopy. Many canopies have a light timber or aluminium joist structure, designed for roofing and not for glass. A lantern with HR++ double glazing weighs considerably more. So have your builder or a structural engineer check first whether the joists can take the weight and the opening.

Match the size to the joist spacing so you interrupt as few joists as possible. The lantern has a standard pitch of 8°, so rain runs off well. If the canopy stands under trees, clean the glass and the gutter a little more often. Tips are in maintaining and cleaning a roof lantern.

  • Have the joists checked for the weight of glass
  • Match the size to the joist spacing
  • Standard pitch of 8° for drainage
  • Space around it for upstand and roofing

Drainage and glass choice under an open roof

Rainwater runs from the glass onto the solid roof and from there into the canopy gutter. That gutter is often narrow and sized for a small roof. Check that it can cope. An explanation is in roof lanterns and gutters.

A canopy is not heated, so the insulation value of the glass matters less than indoors. HR++ double glazing is standard and more than enough. The sun matters more: facing south, it quickly gets warm under clear glass. For a south-facing glass roof, DagLichtDesign advises solar control glass or shading. Because people sit underneath, safety glass to NEN standard is a logical choice.

Delivery, fitting and what to send

A mono-pitch lantern of 1, 2 or 3 metres is always in stock; other sizes are ready from 2 weeks after approval. Collect in Barneveld or have it delivered on an agreed date. Your builder fits it, or the regular installation partner on request. The canopy itself sometimes needs permission. An indication of the total is on costs of a roof lantern on a canopy.

  • Orientation to the sun and any trees

Frequently asked questions

Is a roof lantern on an open canopy worthwhile?

Yes, if the roof is solid and the space beneath feels dark. The glass lets in light without losing shelter from the rain. If the canopy already gets plenty of light from the sides, the gain is smaller.

Does the glass on a canopy need to insulate well?

Not as in a house, because the space beneath is not heated. HR++ double glazing is standard in the lantern and more than enough here. Triple glazing adds little on an open canopy.

How do I stop leaves building up on the lantern?

The standard pitch of 8° lets rain and leaves run off, but under trees some will still collect. Wipe the glass clean now and then and keep the gutter clear, especially in autumn.
