The short answer

Solar control glass has a coating that reflects part of the solar heat while most of the daylight comes in. In a roof lantern facing south or west, it stops the room below from getting too warm on sunny days. At DagLichtDesign you choose solar control glass as an option on the standard HR++ glass.

What solar control glass does

Sunlight consists of visible light, infrared radiation and UV radiation. Much of the heat is in the infrared. Solar control glass has a coating that reflects a large part of exactly that, while letting most visible light through. So the room stays light but warms up less quickly.

How well glass blocks solar heat is shown by the solar factor, also called the g-value. The lower that figure, the less solar heat comes in. Solar control glass can have a slight tint or a little more reflection than clear glass.

  • Reflects part of the solar heat
  • Lets most daylight through
  • Can be combined with HR++ or triple glazing

Orientation: when solar control glass pays off

A roof lantern lies flat or at a low pitch and therefore catches sun all day, far more than a window in a wall. Facing south and west, you notice that in summer. For a glass roof facing south, such as a veranda or canopy, we always recommend solar control glass or shading.

Facing north and east, the solar load is lower. There, clear HR++ glass is often enough and you want to let in as much light as possible. Also consider the use: a veranda or garden room where you sit in the afternoon needs more protection than a hallway.

Solar control glass and overheating

Solar control glass is one of the measures against heat under glass, but not the only one. Warm air rises and collects under the roof lantern. So make sure the room itself is easy to air, for example with a window or vent in the wall. Read about it under overheating under a roof lantern.

If you want extra protection on the hottest days, you can add shading. An external screen stops the heat before it reaches the glass. An overview of the options is under shading for a roof lantern.

  • Solar control glass against heat through the glass
  • Airing through a window or vent in the wall
  • Screen or pleated blind for the hottest days

Ordering solar control glass

State the orientation of your roof lantern in your request, for example with a photo or a sketch showing north. We will then advise whether solar control glass makes sense. You choose it as an option on top of the standard HR++ glass. The quote shows what it costs for your size. Solar control glass is a specific glass choice, so allow for a slightly longer lead time than for a stock size.

Frequently asked questions

Does it get dark under solar control glass?

No, most visible light still comes in. The coating mainly targets the heat in sunlight. The glass may have a slight tint or a little more reflection than clear glass.

Do I need solar control glass facing north?

Usually not. Facing north, the solar load is low and you want as much light as possible. Facing south and west, we recommend solar control glass or shading.

Is solar control glass enough against heat?

It helps a lot, but airing the room through a window or wall vent and possibly a screen complete the picture. Warm air under the glass needs somewhere to go. The combination works best.
