A roof lantern in Friesland is made for you in the DagLichtDesign factory in Barneveld. In short: custom work in aluminium and glass, a quote within 24 hours, a lead time from 2 weeks after approval and delivery on an agreed date. Your own contractor fits it.

Heerenveen is about 140 km from the factory, Leeuwarden about 150 km. Friesland is a province of villages, farmhouses and detached homes, with a lot of open land and wind from the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. For most people in Friesland, delivery on an agreed date is the logical route.

Roof lantern in Friesland: converted farmhouses

The Frisian farmhouse has two well-known forms: the head-neck-body farmhouse, with a house at the front and a large barn behind, and the stelp, with everything under one pyramid-shaped roof. Many of these farmhouses have become homes. The barn then becomes a spacious kitchen-diner, workshop or studio, but gets little daylight through the walls. These barns are often tall and deep, with a large roof surface.

In such a deep space, a roof lantern makes a big difference. A gable roof lantern follows the line of a traditional roof and can be extended modularly beyond 6 m in length. A hipped roof lantern suits a squarer space, standard up to 9 m² of glass in one piece.

Wind over open land

On the coast and in open meadowland there is a lot of wind. That puts demands on the anchoring of the upstand and on the connection to the roof covering. The standard pitch of 8° makes sure water and dirt run off well. Have the contractor fix the upstand firmly.

Lifting also needs attention. A large roof lantern on a farmhouse roof is fitted with a crane or cherry picker, on a day without strong wind. The article transport and lifting lists the safety points.

  • Standard pitch of 8°, water and dirt run off
  • Upstand firmly fixed in the roof structure
  • Lifting only in calm weather
  • Safety glass to the NEN standard

Village home with extension or conservatory

Frisian villages have many detached and semi-detached homes, often with a garden room or conservatory at the back. A roof lantern in its roof turns it into a bright space you use all year round. More about that application is under roof lantern in a conservatory or garden room.

A conservatory with a lot of glass can get warm in summer, especially facing south. Solar control glass or a screen on the roof lantern keeps the heat in check. On the north side, triple glazing is worth considering instead, because the room gets less solar heat there.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Friesland

How do I get a roof lantern in Friesland?

By delivery on an agreed date, or you collect it in Barneveld. At around 140 to 150 km, delivery is more convenient for most people. Read how delivery works.

Can a roof lantern go on an old farmhouse roof?

That depends on the structure. An old roof is not always suitable for extra weight or a large opening. A contractor or structural engineer assesses the load-bearing capacity. When a farmhouse is converted into a home, the roof is often tackled anyway, and the roof lantern can then be included straight away.

Is triple glazing worthwhile in Friesland?

Triple glazing has a U-value of about 0.5 W/m²K, against about 1.1 for HR++ double glazing. It mainly makes sense above a bedroom or with a north or west orientation. For a south-facing kitchen-diner, HR++ is usually more than enough.

Do I need a permit for a farmhouse conversion?

Usually not for the roof lantern itself, but sometimes for the conversion or an extension. For a farmhouse designated as a monument, extra rules apply. Check with your municipality.
