The short answer

A small roof lantern can be carried onto the roof by two or three people via scaffolding. Larger roof lanterns or heavy glazing units are lifted with a crane and lifting slings or with a vacuum lifter. For double glazing, allow roughly 20 to 30 kilos per square metre of glass, and more for triple glazing.

How much does a roof lantern weigh?

Most of the weight is in the glass. Glass weighs about 2.5 kilos per square metre per millimetre of thickness. A double glazing unit with two 4 millimetre panes therefore comes to roughly 20 kilos per square metre. With laminated glass on the inside or with triple glazing, that quickly becomes 30 kilos or more.

A roof lantern of 1 by 2 metres can therefore be carried by two or three people. A large gable or hipped roof lantern easily weighs a few hundred kilos. The difference in build-up between HR++ and triple is explained in triple glazing or HR++ double glazing.

  • Glass: about 2.5 kg per m² per mm of thickness
  • Double glazing with two 4 mm panes: roughly 20 kg per m²
  • Laminated inner pane or triple glazing: 30 kg per m² or more
  • Aluminium frame: light compared with the glass

Transport: collection or delivery

You can collect the roof lantern in Barneveld by appointment, with no delivery charge. Bring a van or trailer that is large enough, with ratchet straps and a soft base. Transport the unit as it is packed and make sure it cannot slide or rattle. A glazing unit that is jolted hard on the way can later develop a crack or a leaking edge seal.

If you would rather have it delivered, that happens on an agreed date. Make sure there is room to set the unit down and enough hands to help, or that the lifting equipment is ready.

How do you lift a roof lantern onto the roof?

For a low roof and a small roof lantern, carrying it up via scaffolding is often enough. If the roof is higher or the roof lantern larger, a crane, telehandler or ladder hoist is needed. A vacuum lifter with suction cups makes placing individual panes much more controllable.

Every delivery includes an installation manual with safety instructions for lifting and placing. Follow it, use lifting slings rather than chains and do not lift in strong wind. A glass surface catches a lot of wind and can start to turn in a gust.

  • Lifting slings or vacuum lifter, no chains against glass or frame
  • Do not lift in strong or gusty wind
  • Nobody under the load while lifting
  • Prepare a clear, level spot on the roof beforehand

On the roof: setting down and placing

Never set the unit down directly on the glass and never let it rest on a corner. Lay soft timbers or boards ready. Always work with edge protection on the roof, and read fall protection and safety around a roof lantern for this.

If a wide roof lantern comes in sections or with a glazing bar, that is often helpful when lifting: smaller, lighter parts. When a glazing bar is needed is explained in a roof lantern with or without a glazing bar.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a crane for a roof lantern?

Not always. Two or three people can carry a small mono-pitch roof lantern onto a low roof via scaffolding. For a higher roof, a large gable or hipped roof lantern or heavy triple glazing, a crane or telehandler is safer.

How do I carry a roof lantern in a van or trailer?

Transport it as it is packed and follow the instructions you receive on collection. What matters is that the unit is secured, cannot slide and that there is no point load on the glass anywhere. If in doubt, give them a call before you set off.

Who arranges the lifting?

You or your contractor, because installation is done by your own contractor or builder. On request, installation can be arranged through a regular installation partner, as a separate line in the quote.
