Roof lantern cost: how the price is built up

CostsReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026
Google-rating: 5.0★★★★★from 2 reviews

Roof lantern cost always comes down to seven components: the roof type, the size, the glass, the frame colour, the upstand, delivery and installation. The type sets the base: at DagLichtDesign a mono-pitch roof lantern starts at €1,532 and a hipped one at €3,481. Size and glass then account for most of the difference. Below, per component, what it does to the price.

Roof lantern cost per type: prices from

The roof type is the base of the price, because each type has a different amount of profiles, corners and drainage. A price from applies to the smallest version with standard HR++ double glazing.

  • Mono-pitch roof lantern: from €1,532
  • Wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern: from €1,689
  • Gable roof lantern: from €2,399
  • Hipped roof lantern: from €3,481

Size and glass area

After the type, size counts most: more square metres means more glass and longer profiles. We make a mono-pitch lantern up to 5 metres wide in one panel. Wider, a thermally broken intermediate bar is added, which changes both price and appearance. A gable lantern goes up to 6 metres long as standard, a hipped lantern up to 9 m² of glass in one piece; beyond that it becomes modular.

Mono-pitch lanterns of 1, 2 and 3 metres are in stock and can therefore be delivered quickly. If you can match your design to such a size, it often saves time and money, see roof lantern from stock. Examples per type are in what a mono-pitch roof lantern costs and what a gable roof lantern costs.

Glass: HR++ as standard, options extra

HR++ double glazing is included in the price as standard. Triple glazing, solar control glass, frosted glass, acoustic glass and safety glass are options that raise the price. Choose the glass for the room below and the orientation, not for the lowest figure in the brochure. The trade-off between the two insulation levels is explained in triple glazing or HR++.

Frame colour and finish

The aluminium frame is thermally broken and available in any RAL colour. Popular choices are RAL 9005 jet black, RAL 7016 anthracite and RAL 9016 traffic white. A dual-colour version, with a different colour inside and out, is also possible; the quote shows what that does to the price. Tips for choosing are in choosing a frame colour.

Upstand, delivery and installation

The upstand is the raised kerb on which the roof lantern rests. Usually the builder constructs it on the roof. We supply a wall-abutting lean-to made to measure including upstand and flashing profiles, matched to the wall type.

Delivery works in two ways: collection by appointment from the factory in Barneveld, with no shipping costs, or delivery on an agreed date. See collection in Barneveld.

Installation is done by your own builder or handyman. As a rough guide, allow half a day to two working days for fitting and flashing, depending on type and size, and always ask for a quote for it. If you would rather hand it over, installation can be arranged through a regular installation partner, as a separate line in the quote.

How to keep the price under control

Building firms get contractor prices from their first project, see roof lanterns for contractors. Payment is made in two parts: a 30% deposit on order and 70% on completion, with a payment term of 14 days.

  • Choose a mono-pitch lantern in a standard size if it fits
  • Keep a mono-pitch lantern up to 5 m wide, then no bar is needed
  • Collect it yourself in Barneveld to avoid shipping costs
  • Ask for HR++ and triple side by side and compare
Tip from the factory

Request the quote with a photo and the outside dimensions of your upstand. The more precise the size, the less the price you receive within 24 hours will change afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What does a roof lantern cost on average?

There is no honest average, because every roof lantern is made to measure. Prices from range from €1,532 for a mono-pitch lantern to €3,481 for a hipped lantern; larger sizes and glass options come on top. With a photo or sketch you have a price within 24 hours.

Is installation included in the price of the roof lantern?

No, not as standard. You have the lantern installed by your own builder or handyman. If you want us to arrange it, installation can be done by a regular installation partner; that appears as a separate line in the quote.

How long is a quote valid?

A DagLichtDesign quote is valid for 30 days. It shows the glass options, the lead time and the price. The lead time is from 2 weeks after approval, up to 8 weeks for complex custom work.

What costs come on top of the roof lantern?

Allow for the builder's costs for the upstand, fitting and connection to the roof covering, and possibly a roofer. If you make a new opening in an existing roof, structural work is added. Shipping costs may apply for delivery; collection in Barneveld has no shipping costs.
