The short answer

A gable roof lantern on a side extension works well for a separate room beside or behind the house, such as a study, utility room or ground floor bedroom. The ridge follows the length of the extension, so the whole room gets even light. A gable roof lantern is made to measure from €2,399, as standard up to 6 metres long and 4 metres wide per roof slope.

Why a gable roof lantern on a side extension?

A side extension is often a separate room with only one or two windows. Anything further from those windows stays dark. A gable roof lantern running along the length of the extension puts light on both long walls. That makes a room of 3 by 5 metres usable as a workspace or bedroom without switching the lights on during the day.

If the extension sits right against the tall wall of a terraced house and is not deep, a wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern is often the smarter option. It connects to the wall and adds side light as well as top light. The gable works best when the extension stands free or is longer than it is wide.

  • Study, utility room or ground floor bedroom
  • Extension that is longer than it is wide
  • Free side wall without a tall wall next to it
  • Against a tall wall a wall-abutting lean-to is often better

How do you align the ridge on an extension near the boundary?

Many side extensions stand on or close to the property boundary. With an asymmetric gable you place the ridge off-centre. The neighbours' side then gets a short slope and your own garden side a long slope, which gives the most light. Thanks to the standard pitch of 8°, the ridge also stays low.

The standard 4 metres per slope covers most side extensions comfortably. A length of up to 6 metres comes in one piece; longer lanterns are built up in modules.

Connection and drainage on the side extension

A gable drains to two sides. The self-cleaning drainage system in the bottom rails carries the water to the existing gutter or downpipe. If your extension only has a gutter on one side, the flat roof on the other side must fall towards an outlet or downpipe. Discuss this with your builder or roofer in advance.

If the gable end of the extension meets the house, that joint against the wall is made just as watertight as any other roof detail against a wall. Mention in your request that the lantern will sit close to the wall, so the quote takes it into account.

Which glass should you choose for a side extension?

If the extension becomes a bedroom, triple glazing is worth considering. It insulates better and dampens sound a little more, around 36 dB against around 32 dB for HR++ double glazing. Read more about a roof lantern above a bedroom. If the neighbours look straight into your extension from upstairs, frosted glass in a roof lantern helps. The light comes in, the view does not.

Delivery is from 2 weeks after approval, up to 8 weeks for special glass. Your builder installs the lantern with the printed and digital installation manual. For an idea of the overall budget, see the cost of a roof lantern on a side extension.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for a side extension with a gable roof lantern?

Usually not for the roof lantern itself, but sometimes for the extension. That depends on size, position and the local zoning plan. Read when you need a permit and check with your council.

What should I send for a quote for my side extension?

A photo or sketch with the internal dimensions of the extension is enough. Say whether the roof already exists, what covering it has and which side the boundary is on. If you have nothing yet, they will come and have a look.

Which frame colour can I choose for my side extension?

The aluminium frame is thermally broken and available in any RAL colour. Popular choices are jet black (RAL 9005), anthracite (RAL 7016) and traffic white (RAL 9016). Bicolour is possible too, with a different colour inside and out.
