A gable roof lantern on a garden room gives the classic look of an orangery, with daylight from two sides. Because a garden room already has a lot of glass in its walls, the main challenge is not light but heat: too warm in summer, quickly cold in winter. With the right glass, shading and ventilation it becomes a room you use all year.
A garden room often stands apart from the house or is linked to it by a corridor. A gable roof lantern with the ridge along the length of the room suits that free-standing position. The glass follows the line of a classic summerhouse or orangery. More about the application itself in a roof lantern in a conservatory or garden room.
A roof lantern has no moving parts. You air the room through the windows and doors in the walls, and a garden room usually has plenty of those. That way the glass roof stays one calm, sealed whole.
A garden room with glass walls and a glass ridge catches a lot of sun. Facing south or west, the temperature can rise quickly on a summer afternoon. Solar control glass keeps part of the solar heat out. A pleated blind inside helps against glare; an external screen also stops the heat. Read how to prevent overheating.
In the design, keep a solid roof edge of a few decimetres around the lantern. That gives you somewhere to fix shading, lighting and curtain rails later without drilling into the frame.
Garden rooms often hold plants, people sit there and sometimes cook. That produces moisture. On cold days the moisture settles on the coldest surface. Good ventilation and a thermally broken frame limit this. Where condensation comes from is explained in condensation on a roof lantern.
If you also use the garden room in winter and it faces north or west, triple glazing makes sense. The U-value drops from about 1.1 to about 0.5 W/m²K. If the room faces south and you mainly use it from spring to autumn, HR++ double glazing is more than enough. The quote shows both side by side.
A garden room of 3 by 4 metres often gets a gable over most of the roof. The standard goes up to 6 metres long and 4 metres wide per roof slope; larger is possible in modules. Delivery is from 2 weeks after approval, and your builder installs it using the installation manual.
Usually yes, if the roof can carry the lantern. Your builder makes an opening and an upstand in the existing roof. Send a few photos and the dimensions and you will have a quote within 24 hours.
The aluminium frame is available in any RAL colour. Jet black, anthracite and traffic white are popular. Bicolour is also possible, for example white inside and anthracite outside, to match the windows of the garden room.
A pleated blind inside mainly softens glare. By then the heat is already through the glass. If you really want less heat, choose solar control glass or an external screen. See also a pleated blind for a roof lantern.
