The short answer

Connecting a roof lantern with zinc is about the connection to a wall. A zinc flashing is fixed in or onto the wall and laps over the top of the wall abutment profile, so rainwater running down the wall flows off over the roof lantern. This mainly applies to a wall-abutting lean-to against a taller wall.

What zinc does on a roof lantern

A roof lantern whose high side meets a wall has a vulnerable joint: the point where frame and wall meet. Rain running down the wall must not get behind it. A flashing is a strip that laps from the wall over that joint, like a little roof above the connection.

On the wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern, the connection uses a wall abutment profile plus an EPDM lead substitute or a zinc flashing. Which of the two suits depends on the wall type. Still unsure about the type of roof lantern? Read lean-to or wall-abutting lean-to.

Zinc or EPDM lead substitute?

Zinc is a traditional material that lasts a long time and weathers attractively. It is rigid, so it is shaped to size in advance. Zinc expands and contracts with temperature, so you fix it in a way that lets it move. Contact with some timbers, such as oak or western red cedar, can also attack zinc.

An EPDM lead substitute is flexible and follows an irregular shape more easily. That helps with an uneven wall or an awkward corner. Both do the same job. The choice follows from the wall and the finish you want to see.

  • Zinc: sturdy, long-lasting, weathers nicely
  • Zinc: leave room for expansion
  • Lead substitute: flexible on uneven walls
  • Both: lead water over the connection

Connecting a roof lantern with zinc by wall type

In brickwork, the flashing is usually chased into a mortar joint and sealed. With render, sand-lime brick or concrete panels, it is often fixed with a clamping profile or in a rebate. With timber cladding, the connection usually goes behind the cladding. DagLichtDesign supplies the right connection profile for each wall type.

The installation manual contains the connection details for EPDM, bitumen and zinc. How the connection to the roof itself works is covered in connecting to EPDM. On a roof extension or an extension against the main house, the same wall connection applies.

Frequently asked questions

Is lead still used for wall connections?

Lead is used less and less, partly because of the environmental impact of rainwater run-off. Zinc and EPDM lead substitutes are the common alternatives. DagLichtDesign works with an EPDM lead substitute or a zinc flashing.

Who fits the zinc flashing?

Your own builder, roofer or contractor does that during installation. The connection profiles come with the delivery of a wall-abutting lean-to, made to measure for your wall type. If you have questions during the work, call support on weekdays from 7:00 to 17:00.

What if the wall is uneven?

With an uneven wall, such as old brickwork or rough render, a flexible EPDM lead substitute is often easier. It follows the shape of the wall better than rigid zinc. State the wall type in your enquiry and you will receive the matching profile.
