The short answer

When connecting a roof lantern to EPDM, you turn the rubber roof membrane up against the upstand, bond it over the full surface and finish the top edge under the frame or a capping profile. Corners are neatly folded or made with preformed corner pieces. The result is a seamless, watertight transition from roof to roof lantern.

What is EPDM and why does it work well with a roof lantern?

EPDM is a synthetic rubber used as a membrane on many flat roofs. It stays flexible, even in the cold, so it can move with the roof. Large sheets are often laid in one piece, with few seams.

A roof lantern sits on an upstand. That upstand is where the roof ends and the roof lantern begins. The EPDM runs up against the upstand, so water on the roof can never get under the roof lantern. DagLichtDesign supplies every roof lantern with an installation manual that includes connection details for EPDM, bitumen and zinc.

Connecting a roof lantern to EPDM in four steps

The exact details are in the installation manual included with every delivery. In broad terms, it goes like this.

Work on a dry, clean surface and use the adhesive and primer that belong to the EPDM system. Let the membrane run high enough. A common rule of thumb is at least 15 centimetres above the finished roof covering, so puddles and wind-driven water cannot get over it. More on height and insulation is in the upstand of a roof lantern.

  • Fit, insulate and level the upstand
  • Turn the EPDM up the upstand and bond it
  • Fold the corners or use preformed corner pieces
  • Finish the top edge under the frame or a capping profile

Where it goes wrong

Most leaks in a roof lantern are not in the glass but in the connection. A corner that is not folded properly, adhesive on a wet or dusty surface, or a membrane that stops just too low: water will find that spot. If that sounds familiar, see my roof lantern is leaking.

If in doubt, leave the roof work to a roofer or your builder. If the roof has bitumen rather than EPDM, read connecting to bitumen. Questions during installation? DagLichtDesign phone support is available on weekdays from 7:00 to 17:00.

  • Never bond on a wet or dusty surface
  • Take extra care finishing the corners
  • Run the membrane well above the roof covering
  • Always cover the top edge, never leave it open

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect new EPDM to an old EPDM roof?

Usually yes, if the existing membrane is still in good condition. The old membrane is cleaned and joined to the new one with the right primer and tape or adhesive. If the roof is weathered, consider renewing the whole roof surface.

How high should the upstand rise above EPDM?

A common rule of thumb is at least 15 centimetres above the finished roof covering. That keeps the frame dry with puddles, snow and wind. The installation manual gives the details for your roof lantern.

Does a roofer have to connect the EPDM?

Not necessarily; an experienced tradesperson or builder can do it too. It does call for precise work with the right adhesive and corner pieces. If in doubt, have it done by someone who works with EPDM every day, or see advice and service.
