The short answer

A screen for a roof lantern is external shading: a fabric that rolls out above or onto the glass and stops the sun before it reaches the glass. That makes it the most effective way to prevent overheating. For a roof lantern, choose a windproof system with side guides, and consider solar control glass too.

Why an external screen works so well

Once solar heat is through the glass, it stays inside. Internal blinds block the light, but the heat is already in the room. A screen on the outside catches the sun before it reaches the glass. The space under the roof lantern stays noticeably cooler as a result.

This makes a real difference with a roof lantern facing south or west, or above a veranda or garden room. Read more about the causes in overheating under a roof lantern.

Roof lantern screen: windproof and well fixed

A roof lantern sits exposed on the roof and catches a lot of wind. A screen for a roof lantern therefore usually has side guides that hold the fabric, often with a zip system. That keeps the fabric taut and stops it flapping. Many systems have a wind sensor that retracts the fabric automatically in strong wind.

Agree beforehand with the screen supplier how it will be fixed: on the upstand, on the roof next to the roof lantern or on its own frame. That way you know the fixing suits the frame and the roof covering is not pierced where it should not be.

  • Side guides or zip system to stop flapping
  • Wind sensor that retracts the fabric in a storm
  • Agree the fixing with frame and roof in advance
  • Electric operation, as the roof is out of reach

Solar control glass as an alternative or addition

DagLichtDesign supplies roof lanterns with solar control glass. A coating on the glass reflects a large share of the solar heat while most of the daylight comes through. It works all year round, with no moving parts and no fabric to maintain. The difference is explained in solar control glass in a roof lantern.

For a south-facing glass roof, such as a veranda or canopy, DagLichtDesign advises solar control glass or shading. A screen is then an addition for the hottest days. If you mainly want softer light and more privacy indoors, look at a pleated blind for your roof lantern. An overview of all options is in shading for a roof lantern.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I buy a screen for my roof lantern?

Screens for roof lanterns are made by shading specialists. DagLichtDesign makes the roof lantern itself and can supply it with solar control glass. Agree the size and fixing of the screen with your roof lantern in advance, so everything fits together.

Does a screen on a roof lantern need to be electric?

On a flat roof you usually cannot reach a roof lantern, so electric operation is practical. With a sun and wind sensor, the screen works by itself. Include the power supply in your builder's planning.

Is solar control glass enough without a screen?

In many situations, yes. Solar control glass limits the heat all year round. Facing south, under a large glass area, a screen can make the difference on the hottest days.
