When connecting a roof lantern to bitumen, the roofing sheets are turned up against the upstand, usually in two layers, with a reinforced corner at the bottom. The top edge is finished under the frame or a capping profile. Because bitumen is often laid with a torch, you usually leave this to a roofer.
Bitumen roofing consists of sheets laid over each other, usually in two layers. They are torched on, bonded or mechanically fixed. A bitumen roof is sturdy and easy to walk on, and you find it on many older and newer extensions.
Where a roof lantern goes in, those sheets must end neatly against the upstand. That is the challenge: the transition from horizontal to vertical is exactly where water lingers and where the material moves most.
At the base of the upstand there is often an angle fillet or corner strip: an extra strip that reinforces the corner between roof and upstand. Both layers are then turned up against the upstand, with enough overlap. The top edge is fixed and covered, so no water can run behind it.
The upstand must be high enough. A common rule of thumb is at least 15 centimetres above the finished roof covering. The connection details for bitumen are in the installation manual that DagLichtDesign includes with every delivery.
Bitumen is often torched on with an open flame. Around a timber upstand and a glass roof lantern, that calls for care. Many roofers therefore use cold-bonded or self-adhesive sheets for this kind of connection. That choice is best left to the professional on the roof.
DagLichtDesign does not install as standard. Your own builder or roofer connects the roof lantern to the roof. If the roof has a rubber membrane, see connecting to EPDM. If the roof lantern is going into an existing roof, first read a roof lantern in an existing flat roof.
Yes, if the roof is still in good condition. Around the new upstand the bitumen is repaired and connected. If the roof is due for replacement, combine the two so everything is done right in one go.
That varies by roof and region, and depends on the scope of the work. Always ask a roofer for a quote. The roof lantern itself, with price and delivery time, is in the DagLichtDesign quote.
The problem is usually in the corner or the top edge of the connection, not in the glass. An upstand that is too low or an overlap that has come loose lets water in. Read more in my roof lantern is leaking.
