Lelystad is about 55 km from the factory and Almere about 60 km. Flevoland is the youngest province in the Netherlands. That makes the housing stock here different from elsewhere, and so are the questions about a roof lantern.

Roof lantern in Flevoland: young homes, different questions

The Noordoostpolder fell dry in 1942, Eastern Flevoland in 1957 and Southern Flevoland in 1968. Lelystad got its first residents in the late 1960s, Almere in 1976. Almost all homes were therefore built after the war, most of them from the 1970s onwards: many terraced and semi-detached houses, and in Almere also districts with self-build homes and distinctive architecture.

In a young home the structure is usually well documented and the insulation reasonably up to standard. Building drawings are often still available. Building new? Then it pays to put the roof lantern into the design early; read including a roof lantern in a new build.

Open polder, plenty of wind and plenty of sun

Flevoland is flat and open. Between the residential areas and along the border lakes there is little to break the wind. For a roof lantern this means a firmly anchored upstand, a well-sealed connection and careful lifting. Do not fit a roof lantern in strong wind, because a glass surface catches a lot of it.

On an open plot without tall trees, the sun comes in at full strength too. If the roof lantern faces south, consider solar control glass. The article on overheating under a roof lantern sets out the options.

  • Solar control glass for a south-facing roof lantern
  • Standard pitch of 8° for good drainage
  • Upstand firmly fixed in the roof structure
  • Lifting and fitting on a calm day

Extension on a terraced house from the 1980s or 1990s

Many terraced houses in Almere and Lelystad have a deep living room, and a rear extension of a few metres has often been added. A mono-pitch roof lantern suits it well. The sizes 1, 2 and 3 metres are always in stock, and up to 5 m wide it can be done in one panel without an intermediate bar.

Such an extension usually has a flat roof with EPDM or bitumen. The roof lantern sits on an upstand and is connected to it watertight; the fitting guide describes both details. If there is already a rooflight dome in that roof, it can often make way for a roof lantern, provided the joists allow it. With the standard pitch of 8°, the dirt the polder wind carries along also runs off well.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Flevoland

How do I get a roof lantern in Almere or Lelystad?

You collect it by appointment in Barneveld, with no delivery charges, or it is delivered on an agreed date. How delivery works is explained under roof lantern delivery in the Netherlands.

Can the roof lantern go on an existing extension?

Usually yes, provided the structure allows it. A contractor or structural engineer assesses the load-bearing capacity of the roof. With a recent home the building drawings are often still available, which makes that assessment easier.

Do I need a permit in Flevoland?

Usually not for the roof lantern itself. A new extension, annex or canopy sometimes does need one, depending on the situation. Check with your municipality: Almere, Dronten, Lelystad, Noordoostpolder, Urk or Zeewolde.

Which glass should I choose with lots of sun?

HR++ double glazing is standard, with a U-value of about 1.1 W/m²K. On an open, sunny plot, solar control glass is worth considering. Triple glazing insulates better but does not always pay for itself within ten years.
