A roof lantern in the province of Utrecht comes from DagLichtDesign in Barneveld, just over the provincial border in Gelderland. In short: glass roof lanterns made to measure in our own factory, a quote within 24 hours and a lead time from 2 weeks after approval. Your own contractor fits it, or the regular installation partner on request.

The distances are small. Renswoude is about 15 km from the factory, Amersfoort and Veenendaal about 25 km and the city of Utrecht about 50 km. Collecting it yourself is therefore easy for many people in the province. Delivery on an agreed date is also possible.

Roof lantern in Utrecht province: terraced and mid-terrace homes

A large share of homes in the province are terraced or mid-terrace houses. Think of the 1930s districts in Utrecht and Amersfoort, the post-war expansions from the 1950s to the 1970s and the Vinex districts of recent decades, such as Leidsche Rijn and Vathorst. All these homes share the same pattern: a deep, narrow floor plan and a rear extension that leaves the middle of the house dark.

A roof lantern on the extension brings light exactly where it is missing: in the zone between the old rear wall and the new garden doors. That is often where the kitchen or dining table is, the place where you spend most of your day.

Abutting the wall of a mid-terrace house

With a mid-terrace house, the extension often runs up to the higher rear wall. A wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern is then often the best choice. It connects to the wall on the high side and gives light from above and from the side. The connection uses a wall abutment profile plus an EPDM lead replacement or a zinc flashing, depending on the type of wall.

With a mid-terrace house, think about the neighbours too. The extension is often on or against the boundary, so rules on height and distance come into play. The article roof lantern against a mid-terrace house lists the points to watch.

  • Wall type: brickwork, render, timber or sand-lime brick
  • Height of the wall above the extension roof
  • Finish with an EPDM lead substitute or zinc flashing
  • Finish of the roof edge on the neighbours' side

Delivery in a busy street

In city centres and older districts, streets are often narrow and parking is limited. So when you choose delivery, agree with your contractor in advance where the roof lantern will be unloaded and how it gets to the back. With a mid-terrace house without rear access, that sometimes means through the house, sometimes over the roof with a crane or cherry picker. Also read how delivery in the Netherlands works.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Utrecht

How far is Barneveld from the city of Utrecht?

About 50 km by road. Amersfoort and Veenendaal are about 25 km away. Collection at the factory is possible by appointment and costs nothing in delivery charges.

Which roof type suits a 1930s house?

Usually a mono-pitch or wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern on the rear extension. The rear wall of a 1930s house is often brickwork, which allows a neat connection with a wall abutment profile. If the house is in a protected townscape, check the rules with the municipality first.

Can my contractor in Utrecht province work with your roof lanterns?

Yes. Contractors get trade prices from the very first project, with no threshold or minimum. With more than three projects per calendar year, a partner discount is added, applied directly in every quote. There is one fixed point of contact.

What do I need for a quote?

A photo or sketch is enough; a building drawing is not required. Send the rough dimensions, the type of extension roof and your glass choice. The quote arrives in your inbox within 24 hours and is valid for 30 days.
