Rotterdam and Zoetermeer are about 95 km from the factory, The Hague about 105 km. Collecting is possible, but delivery is the more obvious choice. In this province the question is strikingly often about a flat roof: from the post-war terraced house to the extension of a town house.

Roof lantern in South Holland: three homes, three questions

Rotterdam was bombed in May 1940 and its centre was largely rebuilt after the war, with many flats and terraced houses from the 1950s and 1960s. Besides old mansions, The Hague has many 1930s districts. Zoetermeer grew from the 1960s and 1970s as a designated growth town, with streets full of terraced houses with a flat roof on the extension or storage room.

With a post-war or growth-town home, the question is often: can the old rooflight dome come out and a roof lantern go in? With a 1930s house it is usually about a new extension with a mono-pitch or wall-abutting lean-to roof lantern against the rear wall.

Replacing a rooflight dome with a roof lantern

Many extensions from the 1970s and 1980s have a plastic rooflight dome. Over time it yellows, insulates poorly and gives little view outside. A mono-pitch roof lantern is the alternative: a thermally broken aluminium frame in any RAL colour with HR++ double glazing as standard and triple glazing as an option. Thanks to the standard pitch of 8°, the water runs off by itself.

Whether the existing opening can be made larger depends on the joists. A contractor or structural engineer assesses that. The step-by-step plan is under replacing a rooflight dome with a roof lantern.

  • Size of the current roof opening or upstand
  • Type of roof covering: EPDM or bitumen
  • Condition of the joists around the opening
  • Preferred glass: HR++ double glazing or triple glazing

Plan the delivery well

At around 100 km, delivery is a planned trip. Agree the date once the upstand is ready and the contractor is there to help unload. If your contractor has more roof lanterns ready in the same period, it makes sense to plan them together. How delivery works is explained under roof lantern delivery in the Netherlands.

Many districts in the west are built on soft peat and clay, and an extension there often stands on piles. That is a matter for the contractor and structural engineer, not for the roof lantern itself, but it does shape the schedule of the whole renovation.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about South Holland

Can a roof lantern go on a roof terrace?

It can, but a roof lantern is not a walking surface. Keep a distance between the roof lantern and where people walk or sit, or fit a railing. There is more in the article about a roof lantern on a roof terrace.

How long until my roof lantern reaches Rotterdam or The Hague?

The lead time starts at 2 weeks after approval, up to 8 weeks for complex custom work. After that, the roof lantern is delivered on an agreed date. Agree that date with your contractor so the upstand is ready.

Can I replace my rooflight dome without rebuilding the extension?

Often yes, if the opening and the joists are suitable. The roof lantern then sits on a new or adapted upstand and is connected to the existing EPDM or bitumen. If you want a larger opening, the structure has to be adapted.

Who fits the roof lantern in South Holland?

Your own contractor, builder or roofer. Every delivery includes a fitting guide with connection details for EPDM, bitumen and zinc. Fitting is also available on request through the regular installation partner; it then appears as a separate line in the quote.
