The short answer

A made-to-measure roof lantern is built in the factory for your roof opening, with the length, width, glass type and frame colour you need. You fit the roof lantern to the roof, not the roof to the roof lantern. At DagLichtDesign all four roof types are made to measure, and the mono-pitch roof lantern is also kept in stock in 1, 2 and 3 metres.

What does made to measure mean for a roof lantern?

Made to measure means the roof lantern is only built once it is known where it will go. The dimensions of your upstand are the starting point. From these follow the length of the profiles, the size of the panes and any glazing bars.

But made to measure goes beyond centimetres. You also choose the type of glass and the colour of the aluminium. The difference from a standard-size roof lantern is that with a standard size you adapt the opening to what is in the catalogue.

  • Length and width to fit your upstand
  • Thermally broken aluminium frame
  • Glass: HR++, triple, clear, frosted or solar control
  • Frame in any RAL colour, bicolour too

When do you choose made to measure and when a standard size?

With a new extension you are free to design the opening around a standard size. A mono-pitch roof lantern from stock is then often the quickest route, see a roof lantern from stock.

With an existing roof opening, an old rooflight dome that needs removing or an opening with unusual dimensions, made to measure is almost always needed. Anyone who wants a specific colour or glass type also ends up with a made-to-measure unit. To weigh up building something yourself against a factory product, read making a roof lantern yourself or made to measure.

What do you need for a made-to-measure roof lantern?

You do not need a building drawing. A photo or sketch with the main dimensions is enough for the quote, which arrives in your inbox within 24 hours. If you have nothing, they will come and visit. How to measure properly yourself is explained in measuring up for a roof lantern.

Not sure how much glass you actually want? Read choosing roof lantern dimensions first. You need not worry about the pitch: all roof types have a standard pitch of 8°, ample for good drainage. More is explained in the right pitch for a roof lantern.

Does a made-to-measure roof lantern cost more?

Not necessarily. The from-prices apply to made-to-measure roof lanterns: a mono-pitch from €1,532, a wall-abutting lean-to from €1,689, a gable from €2,399 and a hipped roof lantern from €3,481. What you finally pay depends on size, glass and frame colour.

The quote shows HR++ and triple side by side, so you make the choice yourself. The quote is valid for 30 days, giving you time to talk it through with your contractor.

Frequently asked questions

Is a made-to-measure roof lantern more expensive than a standard size?

Not automatically. The price depends mainly on size, roof type and glass choice. A standard size can be delivered faster, but made to measure saves your contractor from adapting the roof opening, and that work costs money too.

How accurately do I need to measure?

As accurately as possible, ideally to the millimetre and at several points, because an upstand is rarely exactly the same everywhere. Give the smallest dimension and state what you measured: internal or external size. If in doubt, send photos as well.

What pitch does a made-to-measure roof lantern have?

All four roof types have a standard pitch of 8°. That meets the advice of at least 7° for good drainage. What is made to measure is the length, the width, the glass and the frame colour.
