Lean-toGable
A roof lantern is not walkable unless the glass has been specifically designed for it. So never step or lean on it, not even during maintenance. Anyone working on a roof with a roof lantern needs fall protection at the roof edge and around the glazed opening.
The glass in a roof lantern is designed for snow, wind and the loads that the standards set for a roof. A person's weight lands on one small point and is of a completely different order. Step on it and you risk breakage and a fall through the roof. Read more about the loads glass is designed for in snow load and wind load.
The same applies to kneeling, leaning or briefly resting a foot on the edge. The frame is not a step and the upstand is not a seat. If you later want to clean the roof lantern up close, that is an important point to remember.
Safety glass does not make a roof lantern walkable, but it limits the consequences if something does go wrong. Laminated glass consists of two panes with an interlayer between them. If it breaks, the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer and no glass falls inside. DagLichtDesign supplies safety glass to the NEN standard as an option.
The difference between laminated and toughened glass, and where to choose which, is explained in safety glass and laminated glass. Laminated glass also helps against break-ins, see is a roof lantern burglar-resistant.
The risk is greatest during installation. The roof opening is exposed and there is carrying and lifting going on. The Dutch Working Conditions Decree names a fall height of 2.5 metres or more as a risk that requires measures. For professionals that means edge protection, scaffolding or personal fall protection. As a homeowner, it is wise to follow the same approach.
An open roof opening is just as dangerous as a roof edge. Cover it with a sturdy board that cannot shift, or put a temporary guardrail around it. The installation manual includes safety instructions for lifting and placing, and transport and lifting explains how to get the glass up safely.
A roof lantern on a roof that nobody visits needs little attention. If someone does go up regularly, for maintenance or because the roof is a terrace, a clear barrier is needed. Read more in a roof lantern on a roof terrace.
For cleaning, choose a method that keeps you off the glass. How that works is explained in cleaning with a ladder or cherry picker.
No. A roof lantern is not walkable unless the glass has been specifically designed for it. Even laminated safety glass does not make a standard roof lantern walkable. It only limits the consequences if the glass breaks.
That depends on the situation and the standards that apply to your build. Above a living space where people sit and walk, laminated glass on the inside is a sensible choice. Your contractor or adviser can assess what is needed in your case.
Keep your distance and do not sit underneath it, especially if the glass is not laminated. Cover it outside against rain without leaning on the glass. Then have the glass replaced as soon as possible.
