Closer to the centre lie the pre-war districts of Assendorp and Diezerpoort, with terraces of workers' houses and town houses. The Hanseatic city itself has a historic centre within its canals, with many listed buildings.

In these older houses an extension often meets a high brick rear wall. A wall-abutting lean-to connects there with a wall abutment profile and an EPDM lead substitute or zinc flashing.
