The short answer

A pleated blind for a roof lantern is internal shading: a pleated fabric tensioned between guides under the glass. It softens harsh light, gives privacy and can black out the room in the evening. Against heat it does less than external shading or solar control glass, because the solar heat is already inside.

What a pleated blind does in a roof lantern

A pleated blind is a folded fabric that you slide open and closed. In a roof lantern the fabric is tensioned in guides on both sides, so it stays in place even when horizontal or sloping. You can often open it from the top or the bottom, or shade just part of it.

There are translucent fabrics that diffuse the light softly, and blackout fabrics for a bedroom or media room. A double pleated blind with a honeycomb structure traps a layer of air. That insulates a little and reduces the cold radiating from the glass in the evening.

  • Soft, filtered light instead of harsh sun
  • Privacy if overlooked from above
  • Blackout in a bedroom or media room
  • Tensioned in guides, even sloping or horizontal

Roof lantern pleated blind: heat and condensation

A pleated blind hangs inside. The sun therefore passes through the glass first and then warms the fabric and the air beneath it. It feels less harsh, but the room does not get much cooler. For real heat control, external shading is more effective, see a screen for your roof lantern, or choose solar control glass.

Watch out for condensation too. A closed pleated blind keeps warm room air away from the glass. The glass gets colder as a result, and condensation can form more easily in the space between fabric and glass. In winter, leave the blind open during the day and ventilate well. More on this in condensation on a roof lantern.

What to check when choosing

Have the pleated blind measured only after the roof lantern is fitted, so the internal size is right. Check whether the frame or upstand has room for the guides. On a wide roof lantern with intermediate bars, each section gets its own blind.

A pleated blind is an addition, not a substitute for the right glass choice. If privacy is your main aim, frosted glass can also work. An overview of internal and external shading is in shading for a roof lantern.

  • Measure after the roof lantern is fitted
  • Room for guides on the frame or upstand
  • One blind per section with intermediate bars
  • Fabric choice: translucent, blackout or insulating

Frequently asked questions

Where do I buy a pleated blind for my roof lantern?

Pleated blinds for roof lanterns are made by specialists in window dressings and shading. DagLichtDesign makes the roof lantern itself, with clear, frosted or solar control glass as you prefer. Have the blind measured after the roof lantern has been fitted.

Can a pleated blind in a roof lantern be electric?

Yes, many pleated blinds for roof windows and roof lanterns come with a motor. That is handy if the roof lantern is high up. Think ahead about a power point or a battery.

Does a pleated blind help against heat under a roof lantern?

A little, especially a light fabric that reflects sunlight. But by then the heat is already through the glass. For real heat control, solar control glass and external shading work better.
