The short answer

A roof lantern above the kitchen costs from €1,532 for a mono-pitch and from €3,481 for a hipped roof lantern at DagLichtDesign. In a kitchen the price is driven mainly by the roof type, the position relative to the island, the glass and sun shading. Match the roof lantern to the kitchen design and you avoid extra work.

Roof lantern kitchen cost: which roof type over which kitchen

For roof lantern kitchen cost you start with the shape of the room. A kitchen in a narrow extension usually gets a mono-pitch roof lantern: one sloping glass surface across the width. A spacious open-plan kitchen with an island can take a hipped roof lantern, sloping on all sides with daylight from every angle. That type costs more, because it has four surfaces and corner profiles.

A gable roof lantern, from €2,399, sits in between. It gives a ridge along the length of the kitchen, for example above a long worktop or dining table.

  • Mono-pitch from €1,532, for a kitchen in an extension
  • Gable from €2,399, for a long kitchen
  • Hipped from €3,481, for an open kitchen with island

Sun and glass: extras that matter in a kitchen

Cooking produces heat and steam. A roof lantern has no moving parts, so make sure you have a good extractor hood and air the room through a window or vent in the wall. That keeps the glass free of condensation. Read more in condensation on a roof lantern.

A south-facing kitchen warms up quickly under glass. Solar control glass keeps part of the solar heat out and is simply part of the glazing unit. For an open kitchen HR++ is usually more than enough, certainly facing south. You will see triple glazing next to HR++ in the quote, but a kitchen rarely needs it.

  • Frame in any RAL colour, bicolour too
  • Solar control glass for a south or west-facing kitchen
  • HR++ standard, usually enough in a kitchen

Plan the roof lantern together with the kitchen design

The most expensive mistake in a kitchen is a roof lantern in the wrong place. A cooker hood, ceiling spotlights or tall cabinets cannot go in the glass area. Put the kitchen drawing next to the size of the roof opening before your contractor alters the joists. Above an island with ceiling extraction, for example, a solid piece of ceiling has to remain.

Mind the height too. Under a roof lantern you get a higher ceiling with reveals that are finished inside. That is work for your contractor or plasterer. How the inside is finished is explained in finishing the inside of a roof lantern.

The kitchen itself and installation

A new kitchen often comes together with an extension. What such an extension roughly costs is in the cost of an extension with a roof lantern. Your own contractor fits the roof lantern, or on request our installation partner. With a photo or sketch you get a quote within 24 hours with glass options, lead time and price. More about this application is in a roof lantern in the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a roof lantern above the kitchen cost?

A mono-pitch starts from €1,532, a gable from €2,399 and a hipped roof lantern from €3,481. The price for your kitchen depends on size, glass and extras such as solar control glass. You have a quote within 24 hours.

Can a roof lantern go above a kitchen island?

Yes, but coordinate it with the extraction. Ceiling extraction or a suspended island hood needs a solid section of ceiling. That is why the roof lantern often goes next to the island, above the dining table or worktop.

Will the kitchen get too warm?

Facing south, it can. Solar control glass helps, as does shading inside or outside and airing the room through a window in the wall. Read more in overheating under a roof lantern.
