The short answer

A roof lantern above a bathroom works well: you get daylight without anyone looking in from the side. The main point to watch is condensation, because showering produces a lot of moisture and glass is the coldest surface in the room. Good extraction, a thermally broken frame and preferably triple glazing keep it under control.

Why a roof lantern above a bathroom or shower?

Bathrooms are often in the middle of the house or have a small frosted window. A roof lantern above a bathroom or shower room brings in daylight from above without neighbours or passers-by looking in. It works particularly well in a bathroom in a single storey extension, a roof extension or a bungalow with a flat roof.

Light from above also falls evenly on the mirror and washbasin, without the harsh side shadow of a wall window. That is pleasant for shaving or make-up.

  • Daylight without being overlooked from the side
  • Even light at the mirror and washbasin
  • A solution for an internal or small bathroom
  • Works in an extension, roof extension or bungalow

How do you prevent condensation above the shower?

A hot shower puts a lot of water vapour into the air in a short time. That vapour condenses on the coldest surface, and in winter that is the glass. A little misting straight after a shower is normal and disappears with good ventilation. If the glass stays wet and drips, the extraction is too weak or the glass too cold.

The first step is mechanical extraction that is powerful enough and keeps running after the shower. Next, warmer glass helps: triple glazing keeps the inner pane several degrees warmer than HR++, so the dew point is reached less quickly. A thermally broken frame keeps the aluminium edge from getting cold. More background in condensation on a roof lantern.

  • Let the extractor run on after showering
  • Triple glazing keeps the inner pane warmer
  • Thermally broken frame against cold edges
  • Gap under the door or a vent for fresh air

Do you need frosted glass above the bathroom?

Nobody can look into a roof lantern from the side. From above, sometimes they can: from a higher window of your own or the neighbours', or from a roof terrace. If the bathroom is in view, choose frosted glass. It still lets through plenty of light, but diffuses it softly. If nobody looks down on the roof, clear glass is nicer: you see the sky and clouds from the bath.

How do you get fresh air in a bathroom with a roof lantern?

A roof lantern is a closed, watertight roof element with no moving parts. So you remove the moisture from the shower with mechanical extraction, and fresh air comes in through a gap under the door, a vent or a window in the wall. That keeps the glass clear and the bathroom fresh. Unsure about the glass choice? Read triple glazing or HR++.

Frequently asked questions

Can aluminium cope with the humid air in a bathroom?

Yes. Aluminium does not rust and a coated profile resists moisture well. Do wipe condensation off the profile now and then and keep the drainage clean.

What is the best glass above a shower?

Triple glazing keeps the inside warmer and so gives less condensation. For privacy from above, choose frosted. Laminated glass on the inside ensures no fragments fall if it breaks; see safety glass and laminated glass.

Won't a small bathroom under glass get too hot?

A small room under a lot of glass can get warm on a sunny day. Facing south, solar control glass or a screen helps. In most bathrooms the glass area is modest, so this plays a smaller role.
