The short answer

A glass roof lantern copes well with ordinary hail; in most Dutch showers the hailstones are too small to break sealed glazing. Severe hail with stones several centimetres across can damage glass. Toughened glass increases resistance and laminated glass keeps a broken pane in place.

Can a roof lantern stand up to hail?

Is a roof lantern resistant against hail? In most cases, yes. Ordinary hail in the Netherlands consists of pellets from a few millimetres to about a centimetre. They rattle loudly on the glass but rarely break sealed glazing. Severe hailstorms with stones of three to five centimetres or larger are rarer, but they do happen, usually in summer during thunderstorms. Then glass can be damaged too.

The chance of damage depends on the size of the stones, the wind and the angle at which they hit the glass. A steeper pane is struck at more of an angle and absorbs less energy than a flat roof.

  • Ordinary hail: up to about a centimetre, rarely damage
  • Severe hail: stones of three centimetres or more
  • Mostly in summer, with thunderstorms
  • Steeper glass is struck at more of an angle

Which glass resists hail best?

Toughened glass is heat treated and several times stronger than ordinary float glass, so it can take far more impact. If it does break, it shatters into small granules. Laminated glass has an interlayer between two sheets of glass; when broken, the fragments stay attached and the pane stays closed. For roof glazing, laminated glass on the inside is a common choice, so no glass falls into the room.

DagLichtDesign supplies safety glass in accordance with the NEN standard. Which make-up suits your roof is explained in safety glass and laminated glass. A heavier unit, such as triple glazing, adds mass as well.

Is polycarbonate better against hail?

Polycarbonate is tough and breaks less easily than glass on impact. Thin multiwall sheets can still dent or crack with large hailstones, especially after years in the sun when the material has become more brittle. Scratches and yellowing increase as well. Glass stays clear and scratch resistant. The full trade-off is in glass or polycarbonate.

What should you do after a hailstorm?

After a heavy storm, check from the ground or from a window for cracks, star-shaped chips or loose gaskets. Do not climb onto a wet or slippery roof and never stand on the glass. If only the outer pane is damaged, the room usually stays dry, but have the glass replaced quickly. With an aluminium roof lantern this can be done separately from the frame.

Hail damage to a house is often covered by buildings insurance. Take photos and contact your insurer before having anything repaired. If water comes in after the storm, read what to do if your roof lantern leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Does hail sound louder than rain on a roof lantern?

Yes, hail sounds short and sharp. A heavier glazing unit dampens it slightly. Read more in rain noise on a roof lantern.

Is a roof lantern covered by my buildings insurance?

Usually yes, as a fixed part of the house. That varies by insurer and policy. Report a renovation so the rebuild value is correct.

Does a rooflight dome resist hail better than a roof lantern?

A plastic dome breaks less easily, but can crack or dent and becomes more brittle under UV light. A glass roof lantern is less prone to ageing. Compare them in roof lantern or rooflight dome.
