The short answer

Installing a roof lantern follows a fixed order: make the roof opening, fit the upstand, insulate, connect and seal the roof covering, lift and place the roof lantern, and finally finish the inside. The upstand must be level and square, or the frame will not seat properly. An experienced contractor usually does the actual placing in one day.

Which steps are involved in installing a roof lantern?

This plan follows the order on site and matches the installation instructions included with every delivery, printed and digital. They contain the connection details and safety instructions for each roof type. Installation is done by your own contractor or builder, or on request by our regular installation partner.

  • 1. Measure up and order the right size
  • 2. Make the roof opening and trim the structure
  • 3. Fit the upstand, level and square
  • 4. Insulate the upstand, joining the roof insulation
  • 5. Turn up the roof covering and seal it
  • 6. Lift the roof lantern onto the upstand
  • 7. Fix the frame and fit the connection profiles
  • 8. Finish the inside

Steps 1 to 3: measuring, opening and upstand

Everything starts with an accurate size. Read how to approach it under measuring up for a roof lantern. After your approval the lead time is from 2 weeks, so only make the opening once delivery is scheduled. That way the roof is not left open for longer than necessary.

Making the opening interrupts joists. A trimmer takes up the load; the contractor or structural engineer decides how. Then comes the upstand. Check the diagonals: if they are equal, the upstand is square. More on this under the upstand of a roof lantern.

Steps 4 and 5: insulating and sealing

The roof insulation continues against the upstand, without gaps. Otherwise you get a cold edge and condensation later. The roofer then turns the roof covering up against the upstand. EPDM, bitumen and zinc each have their own detail; see for example connecting a roof lantern to EPDM. The instructions also include the details for bitumen and zinc.

Steps 6 to 8: lifting, placing and finishing

A glazed roof lantern is heavy. Lift it with enough people or a crane, and follow the safety instructions in the manual. Install in dry, calm weather. Read more about transport and lifting.

Set the roof lantern on the upstand, check its position and fix the frame. Fit the connection profiles and check the seal all round. Inside, finish the reveals afterwards, see finishing the inside. Questions during the work? Our telephone support is available on working days from 7:00 to 17:00.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a roof lantern myself?

With building experience and enough hands it can be done, but work on the roof structure and the roof connection is skilled work. A mistake in the seal only shows at the first heavy shower. We recommend a contractor, builder or our installation partner.

How long does installing a roof lantern take?

For an experienced crew the placing itself is usually done within a day. The opening, upstand and roofing can add one or more days, depending on the situation.

What does installation cost?

That depends on the roof and the contractor. Read the rough ranges under the cost of having a roof lantern installed and always ask for a quote.
