You do hear rain on a glass roof lantern, but far less than on a plastic rooflight dome or a polycarbonate roof. Glass is heavy and stiff, so drops tap through less. If you are sensitive to noise, choose triple glazing or laminated acoustic glass, especially above a bedroom.
Rain noise on a roof lantern is a soft patter in a shower and a dull hiss in a downpour. Many people find it cosy. Unlike a tiled roof, there are no tiles, insulation or ceiling between the rain and the room. The glass takes the drops directly.
How loud it sounds depends on three things: the mass of the glass, the make-up of the glazing unit and the room below. A hard, empty room with a tiled floor and bare walls amplifies sound. A furnished room with curtains, a sofa and a rug dampens it.
Yes, clearly. Polycarbonate is light and acts like a drum skin in the rain. That is why a plastic rooflight dome or multiwall sheeting on a veranda sounds much louder than glass. For the full comparison, read glass or polycarbonate and roof lantern or rooflight dome.
HR++ double glazing reduces outside noise by around 32 dB, triple glazing by around 36 dB. Those figures concern airborne sound, such as traffic. Rain is different: that sound is generated on the glass itself. Even so, a heavier unit helps there too, because more mass and an extra cavity pass on less vibration.
Laminated glass has an interlayer between two sheets of glass. That interlayer dampens vibration, especially if it is a special acoustic film. Laminated glass is also safety glass: if it breaks, the fragments stay attached to the interlayer. Read more in safety glass and laminated glass. DagLichtDesign also supplies sound insulating glass.
Above a living room or kitchen, standard HR++ double glazing is fine for most people. Extra damping pays off mainly above a bedroom, in a study or treatment room, or if you are a light sleeper. A pleated blind under the glass also dampens a little and keeps light out at night.
Yes, hail sounds louder than rain because the stones are heavier. The noise is short and sharp, but says nothing about damage. What hail does to glass is covered in roof lanterns and hail.
Only slightly. On a steeper pane, drops hit the glass at more of an angle and run off faster, which sounds a little softer. The difference is small compared with the choice of glazing unit.
With an aluminium roof lantern the glazing unit can in principle be replaced, but the new unit must fit the profile. So it is better to choose the right glass for the room when ordering. The quote lists HR++ and triple glazing side by side.
