The short answer

Replacing a roof lantern costs the price of the new roof lantern plus the work to remove the old one and connect the new one. At DagLichtDesign a new mono-pitch starts from €1,532. Whether the existing upstand can stay largely determines what the work costs.

Replacing a roof lantern: why and when

Replacing a roof lantern usually happens for a few familiar reasons. The glass has misted up between the panes, the roof lantern keeps leaking, old polycarbonate sheets have turned dull or the frame insulates poorly. With a leak it is wise to find out first where the water comes from. Sometimes the problem is in the connection and replacement is not needed. The article roof lantern leaking helps you on your way.

If replacement is the right choice, a new roof lantern comes with HR++ double glazing as standard and a thermally broken aluminium frame. Anyone moving from plastic sheets notices the difference in clarity and noise. Read glass or polycarbonate.

The upstand: does it stay or go?

The biggest cost question when replacing is the upstand, the kerb the roof lantern rests on. If it is sound, dry, well insulated and square, the new roof lantern can often sit on it. We make it to the size of the existing opening, so there is no trimming or adjusting. If the upstand is rotten, wet or poorly insulated, a new one is needed. That is extra work for your contractor. Read more in the upstand of a roof lantern.

The roof covering around the upstand deserves attention too. Old EPDM or bitumen around a roof lantern is often as old as the roof lantern itself. Renew that connection at the same time and you have years of peace again.

  • Upstand sound and square: often reusable
  • Upstand rotten or wet: replace it
  • Renew the roof covering around the upstand
  • New roof lantern made to fit the existing opening

What the work roughly costs

Your own contractor or roofer does the replacement. Old roof lantern out, upstand checked or renewed, new roof lantern on, connected and finished inside. Allow roughly one to two days of work, depending on size and the state of the upstand. Hourly rates are roughly between €50 and €75 excluding VAT, plus disposal of the old roof lantern. This is a market indication, always ask for a quote. The steps are listed in the step-by-step plan for replacing a roof lantern.

Cost of the new roof lantern

The new roof lantern follows the from-prices per type: mono-pitch from €1,532, wall-abutting lean-to from €1,689, gable from €2,399 and hipped from €3,481. What yours costs depends on size, glass and colour. How a price is built up is explained in how much a roof lantern costs. Frequently asked questions

How much does replacing a roof lantern cost?

The new roof lantern starts from €1,532 for a mono-pitch. Add your contractor's work, roughly one to two days, and possibly a new upstand or roof connection. Always ask for a quote for the work.

Can I put back the same type?

Yes, we make it to the size of your existing opening. You can also choose a different type, for example a mono-pitch instead of an old gable, if the opening allows it. Measure the outside dimension of the upstand and send a photo.

How long does a new roof lantern last?

That depends on use, maintenance and the quality of the connection. Read how long a roof lantern lasts for what you can expect in practice.
