The short answer

A 5 metre roof lantern can still be made as a mono-pitch in one panel, with no intermediate bar. That is exactly the limit: wider than 5 metres, one or more thermally broken bars go in. DagLichtDesign makes a 5 metre roof lantern to measure, with a lead time from 2 weeks after approval.

A 5 metre roof lantern as a mono-pitch in one panel

A 5 metre roof lantern is the largest size in which we make a mono-pitch roof lantern without an intermediate bar. So you get one continuous glass surface across the full width. It looks calm and gives an uninterrupted view of the sky. Stock sizes go up to 3 metres, so a 5 metre roof lantern is always made to measure.

You mainly see this size on a full-width rear or side extension, or over a wide kitchen-diner. Because 5 metres is the limit, it pays to define the opening accurately. If the opening grows by a few centimetres, it no longer fits in one panel.

  • Up to 5 metres wide with no intermediate bar
  • Aluminium frame in any RAL colour
  • Always made to measure, lead time from 2 weeks
  • Thermally broken aluminium frame

What 5 metres of glass needs when fitting

A 5 metre glass surface is large and heavy. In a roof we use safety glass to NEN standard, with an insulating cavity. You do not just lift a unit like that onto the roof with two people. Plan for lifting equipment, such as a crane or aerial platform, and arrange it with your contractor. The installation manual includes safety instructions for lifting and fitting. Also read transporting and lifting a roof lantern.

The upstand has to be right as well. Over 5 metres, a skewed or uneven upstand shows up much sooner than over 1 metre. Have your contractor make the opening square and level beforehand. How to measure properly is explained in measuring for a roof lantern.

Glass and sun on a large surface

The larger the glass, the more sun comes in. Facing south or west, a room under 5 metres of glass can heat up considerably on a summer day. Solar control glass keeps part of the solar heat out. Facing north, HR++ is often enough, or you choose triple glazing for extra insulation. The quote shows both side by side. Read solar control glass in a roof lantern.

  • Solar control glass facing south or west
  • Triple glazing facing north or west, or above a bedroom
  • Obscure glass against views from taller neighbours

Wider than 5 metres

If it has to be wider, there are two routes: a mono-pitch with one or more thermally broken bars, or a different roof type. What that means is in a 6 metre roof lantern. If you are unsure whether a bar would bother you, read with or without an intermediate bar. A slightly smaller size, such as a 4 metre roof lantern, leaves a little more margin below the same limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 5 metre roof lantern be made without an intermediate bar?

Yes, as a mono-pitch. Up to 5 metres wide we make it in one panel. Beyond that, one or more thermally broken bars are added.

Is a 5 metre roof lantern in stock?

No. The stock sizes are 1, 2 and 3 metres. We make a 5 metre roof lantern to measure, with a lead time from 2 weeks after approval. For complex projects or specific glass choices that can go up to 8 weeks.

How much does a 5 metre roof lantern cost?

The mono-pitch starts from €1,532, but that is the entry price. A 5 metre roof lantern costs more, depending on depth, glass and colour. With your dimensions you have a quote within 24 hours.
