The short answer

A glass roof lantern is not burglar resistant by default, but with laminated glass and a firmly anchored frame it is difficult and time consuming for a burglar. The risk depends mainly on how easy the roof is to reach. A fixed roof lantern also has no lock or hinge to force.

Is a roof lantern burglar resistant?

Is a roof lantern burglar resistant? That depends on the glass, the frame, the installation and how easy the roof is to reach. Burglars usually take the quickest route: a poorly locked window or door on the ground floor. A roof is harder to reach and breaking glass makes noise. Still, a flat roof next to a shed, carport or low extension is sometimes easy to climb onto. That also applies to a roof lantern in a flat roof on a single storey.

A DagLichtDesign roof lantern is a fixed, closed roof element with no moving parts and no hinges or locks. So there is nothing to lever open or accidentally leave open.

  • Roof reachable via shed, carport or extension: extra care
  • Fixed roof lantern: no locks to force
  • Laminated glass stays attached to the interlayer when broken
  • Glass and frame together determine resistance

Which glass makes a roof lantern more secure?

Laminated glass consists of two or more sheets of glass with a tough interlayer between them. If someone strikes the pane, the glass cracks but stays attached to the interlayer. No hole appears that someone can simply climb through; breaking through takes time and makes a lot of noise. European standards classify the resistance of glass to attack. A higher class means more or thicker interlayers.

Toughened glass is stronger against impact, but shatters into small granules when it breaks and then stops no one. For burglar resistance, laminated glass is therefore the logical choice. DagLichtDesign supplies safety glass in accordance with the NEN standard. Which make-up suits your situation is explained in safety glass and laminated glass.

How much do the frame and installation count?

The strongest glass helps little if the frame can be pulled loose. A roof lantern should be firmly anchored to the upstand, with fixings that cannot be reached from outside. The DagLichtDesign installation guide describes the step by step plan for upstand and sealing for each roof type. Have your contractor follow it and ask about the details if in doubt.

For new builds, regulations set requirements for the burglar resistance of accessible wall and roof elements. Whether that applies to your roof lantern depends on the situation and the height. With a renovation it is usually your own choice. Talk to your contractor or see advice and service.

Extra measures for an accessible roof

Make climbing difficult. Do not leave bins, ladders or garden furniture against the shed and cut back anything that works as a climbing aid, such as a tree against the wall. A light with a motion sensor on the roof or extension deters intruders. For a roof lantern on a garage or carport this is especially relevant, as those roofs are often low.

  • No ladders or bins against the extension
  • Outdoor light with a motion sensor
  • Laminated glass in the glazing unit
  • Fixings not reachable from outside

Frequently asked questions

Is laminated glass the same as safety glass?

Laminated glass is one type of safety glass. Toughened glass also counts as safety glass, but it works differently: it breaks into small granules. Against burglary, laminated glass works better, because the pane stays closed after breaking.

Does a roof lantern have to meet burglary requirements?

For new builds, regulations may set requirements for accessible wall and roof elements. For a renovation or an extension to an existing home, it is usually not compulsory. Your local authority or contractor will know what applies to your project.

Does my insurance cover a break-in through a roof lantern?

That varies per policy. Some insurers set requirements for locks and hinges or for accessible windows. Check your policy terms or ask your insurer.
