The short answer

You choose the right roof lantern dimensions on three things: the room below, what the roof structure allows and the roof type. A mono-pitch roof lantern in 1, 2 or 3 metres is always in stock; beyond that everything is made to measure. Always order on the external size of the upstand, not on the size of the opening inside.

Which roof lantern dimensions suit your room?

Start inside. Where do you want light: above the dining table, the kitchen island or deep in the room by the old rear wall? The length often follows the length of the room or the furniture below. The width often follows the spacing between the joists.

Bigger is not always better. A large roof lantern facing south brings a lot of heat, see overheating under a roof lantern. Also leave enough roof edge all round for the roof covering and a good connection.

  • Position of dining table, kitchen or workspace
  • Depth of the room from the facade
  • Orientation and risk of heat
  • Space all round for the roof covering

Which sizes are standard and what is bespoke?

A mono-pitch roof lantern in 1, 2 and 3 metres is always in stock. Up to 5 metres wide is possible in one panel without a glazing bar. Wider than that, a thermally broken bar is added; see with or without a glazing bar.

A gable roof lantern goes up to 6 metres long and 4 metres wide per roof pitch as standard, larger in modules. A hipped roof lantern goes up to 9 m² of glass in one piece as standard, larger with segmentation. An overview is under standard roof lantern sizes.

How do you determine the size on the roof?

The order size is the external size of the upstand. The opening inside is smaller, because the upstand and the finish take up space. So measure on the upstand, or where it will go. How to do that exactly is explained under measuring up for a roof lantern.

The roof structure sets limits. Every joist you interrupt has to be supported. The contractor or structural engineer assesses whether a wider opening is possible. Sometimes a long narrow roof lantern between two joists gives more light for less structural work than a wide one.

Which size do you choose if in doubt?

Make a sketch with the room dimensions and the position of the joists, and request a quote. You will have a proposal within 24 hours. Examples of common sizes are under a 2 metre mono-pitch roof lantern and a 4 metre roof lantern.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular size?

For an extension the mono-pitch roof lantern is the most chosen type, and the stock sizes of 1, 2 and 3 metres cover many situations. Which length suits depends on your room.

Is a stock size quicker to deliver?

Yes, the mono-pitch roof lantern in 1, 2 and 3 metres is always in stock. Bespoke work has a lead time from 2 weeks after approval. Other versions are also often available from stock.

Can I have a roof lantern made to my exact size?

Yes. All roof lanterns are made to measure in our workshop in Barneveld. So you are not tied to fixed steps of 50 or 100 centimetres.
