The short answer

A gable roof lantern on an outbuilding gives a studio, workshop, home office or pool house even daylight from two sides. It fits best when the outbuilding already has a pitched roof or may take on a classic look. For a small shed or store, a 1 or 2 metre lean-to roof lantern from stock is usually simpler and cheaper.

When does a gable roof lantern on an outbuilding make sense?

In an outbuilding you are usually working on something: painting, woodwork, repairs, or sitting at a desk. You want light without harsh shadows. A gable roof lantern in the ridge of a pitched roof lets light in from two sides, softening the shadow of your own head and hands.

If the outbuilding is narrow or only used for storage, a gable is soon too much. A 2 metre lean-to roof lantern is always in stock and easier to install. For a summerhouse, the trade-offs are set out in a roof lantern in a summerhouse.

  • Studio or workshop where you want even light
  • Home office or practice room at the bottom of the garden
  • Outbuilding with a pitched roof or a classic look
  • For a small store a lean-to is more logical

Can your outbuilding roof carry a glass gable?

Many outbuildings have a timber frame and a light roof. Glass is heavier than tiles on battens or a sheet roof. Have your builder check whether the rafters can carry the lantern and whether a sturdy trimmer frame is needed around the opening. The upstand sits on that trimmer frame.

The standard size goes up to 6 metres long and 4 metres wide per roof slope. In an outbuilding of 3 by 5 metres, a glass ridge 2 to 3 metres long is often enough for a pleasant workspace. More glass also means more heat in summer.

Glass choice and break-in resistance

If you do not heat the outbuilding, HR++ double glazing is more than enough. If it becomes an office or studio heated all year, compare HR++ and triple glazing in the quote. Many outbuildings are out of sight at the end of the garden. A roof lantern with laminated safety glass makes it harder to get in. Read whether a roof lantern is burglar-resistant.

Permits work as for other outbuildings: usually not for the lantern itself, sometimes for the outbuilding. The ridge height and the distance to the boundary count. See also permits for a roof lantern.

Collection, delivery and installation

You can collect the lantern by appointment at the factory in Barneveld, with no shipping costs. How that works is described in collecting a roof lantern in Barneveld. Delivery on an agreed date is also possible. Your own builder or handyman installs the lantern using the installation manual. A CAD file is available on request, handy if the outbuilding still has to be drawn.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't a gable roof lantern too big for an outbuilding?

That depends on the space. It is made to measure, so the lantern can also be short and narrow. For an outbuilding under 2 metres wide, a lean-to is usually the better and cheaper choice.

What can I do about heat in a studio with a glass ridge?

Facing south, choose solar control glass. For painters and photographers, north light is the most even. If the ridge runs east to west, north light comes in from one side and you can shade the south side if needed.

How long does delivery take for an outbuilding?

From 2 weeks after approval, up to 8 weeks for complex bespoke work or special glass. The lead time is in your quote, so your builder can plan the installation.
