The short answer

Yes, LED lighting and a roof lantern work well together. The lighting usually goes in the interior finish of the upstand or the reveal, not in the glass or the frame itself. Run the cabling before the inside is finished, so nothing has to be opened up later.

Why LED lighting with a roof lantern?

By day a roof lantern is the brightest spot in the room. In the evening the glass becomes a dark patch in the ceiling. With lighting in the reveal of the upstand, that spot remains a calm focal point after dark too. The light grazes the finish and makes the opening visible.

It is practical as well. Above a kitchen island under a roof lantern in the kitchen, an LED line adds task lighting without pendant lamps under the glass.

The best result comes from drawing up the lighting plan together with the design of the building work. The contractor then knows where the upstand must leave space, the electrician knows where the cables go and the finish is made in one go. Fitting it afterwards often works, but with more demolition and repair.

Where exactly does the lighting go?

Usually in a narrow recess or an aluminium profile in the interior finish, around the opening. The light then shines up against the reveal or down into the room. The roof lantern's frame itself is left alone; don't drill into it, as that can compromise the seal and the thermal break.

The finish of the reveals determines what is possible. Read more about finishing the inside of a roof lantern. A taller upstand leaves more room for a profile.

  • Run cabling before the finish goes on
  • Keep the power supply or driver accessible
  • LED profile with diffuser against glare
  • Never drill through the frame or seal

Which light colour and which fittings?

For a living room or kitchen most people choose warm white, around 2700 to 3000 kelvin, and dimmable. That suits the evening atmosphere. If you want to cover the dark glass in the evening, you can combine lighting with a pleated blind for the roof lantern.

The inside of a roof lantern can be cooler and sometimes damper than elsewhere in the room, especially with condensation. Choose a fitting suited to that; in a bathroom there are requirements for splash resistance, see a roof lantern above the bathroom.

Keep the brightness modest. Light that is too strong in the reveal reflects in the glass at night and makes the black surface even more prominent. A dimmable, indirect effect works most calmly in practice.

Frequently asked questions

Does DagLichtDesign supply the LED lighting?

We make the roof lantern to measure. The lighting is built into the interior finish by your contractor or electrician. Agree the position and the height of the upstand with them in advance.

Can I add LED lighting later?

You can, but the finish often has to be partly opened up for the cabling. It is easier to include a conduit and a box during the building work, even if you only fit the lights later.

Does the frame colour affect the result?

Yes. A light frame reflects more, while a dark frame such as RAL 9005 or RAL 7016 defines the edge more sharply. Read more under choosing the frame colour.
