The short answer

A mono-pitch roof lantern on a garage brings daylight into a space that usually has only a door and a fluorescent tube. For a workshop or hobby room, the 2 metre stock size is often a good start. The roof must be able to take the opening; with concrete that needs more preparation than with timber. The lantern costs from €1,532.

Why a mono-pitch roof lantern on a garage?

Many garages no longer house a car, but a workbench, bikes or a washing machine. Anyone who actually works there notices how dark it is. A mono-pitch roof lantern on a garage is then a simple solution: one pane on the flat roof, with no alterations to the walls. Other options are on roof lanterns for garages and carports.

A mono-pitch lantern makes less sense if the garage is only used for storage and you are rarely in it. If the garage is being converted into living space, insulation counts for more and you choose glass and upstand as you would for a living room.

What does the garage roof need for a roof lantern?

Garage roofs are broadly built in two ways: timber joists with decking, or precast concrete slabs. With timber, your builder makes an opening with trimmers. With concrete, an opening must be sawn and a structural check is especially important. How to approach an existing roof is covered in a roof lantern in an existing flat roof.

For a garage of roughly 3 by 6 metres, a 2 metre lantern is often enough; more on this in the 2 metre mono-pitch roof lantern. Put it above the workbench, not above the door. A garage roof is often hard to reach. The standard pitch of 8° lets rain run off well, which saves maintenance.

  • Timber roof: opening with trimmers
  • Concrete roof: sawing plus a structural check
  • Position above the workbench, not above the door
  • 2 metre stock size for quick delivery

Connecting to bitumen, drainage and glass

Many garages have a bitumen roof, sometimes decades old. If the roofing is due for replacement, do it in one go with fitting the lantern. How that works is in connecting a roof lantern to bitumen. Water runs from the low side to the garage's existing outlet, so let the lantern fall that way.

In an unheated garage, HR++ double glazing is more than enough. If the garage backs onto a rear path or alley, security counts too. Laminated safety glass holds together when broken; read more in is a roof lantern burglar-resistant. If you want no overlooking from taller houses next door, obscured glass is an option.

Frequently asked questions

Can a roof lantern go into a concrete garage roof?

Often, yes, but it needs more preparation than a timber roof. An opening has to be sawn and a structural engineer checks whether the slabs allow it. Your builder arranges this.

Should I choose triple glazing for a garage?

Usually not. In an unheated garage, HR++ double glazing is more than enough. If the garage becomes a heated workshop or living space, you can consider triple. The quote shows both side by side.
